Officer reportedly shot in New Orleans East

New Orleans police officer was shot and killed early Friday morning. The accused shooter was also shot when one or more officers returned fire.

Paramedics took the officer to University Medical Center, and he died there, Harrison said. The suspect then ran into a nearby apartment, where he was later apprehended and taken to the hospital.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was on the scene and asked for prayers for the officer.

NBC affiliate WDSU is reporting that a suspect shot at police officers who were on routine patrol.

Police reported an "officer life in danger" around 12:30 Friday morning on the 6800 block of Cindy Place.

The fallen officer, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to an area hospital where he passed away, Harrison told reporters outside the hospital.

The officer's name has not been released.

"This hurts", said Harrison. Eventually, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was transported to a local hospital.

"Our department is grieving, our city is grieving and this family is grieving", said Harrison.
