Paris to banish all but electric cars by 2030

The noise of vehicle engines enveloping the streets of the French capital might in the future become a memory for Paris pedestrians.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases", Christophe Najdovski, an official responsible for the transportation policies in the mayor's office, "Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030". Paris officials aren't calling the limitations on vehicles an outright ban, but rather masquerading it behind a hard cutoff where inefficient cars powered by an internal combustion engine would be phased out in favor of newer, greener technology.

The city's planned steps to phase out gasoline- and diesel-engined cars reflect a growing trend among large cities to take action on environmental issues apart from their countries' governments.

"Sensitizing residents to the need to modify their behavior towards the vehicle was part of the objectives of this day", the mayor's office said in a statement, adding that it was also meant to be a symbol "that cities can and must invent concrete solutions to fight air pollution caused by traffic".

The city's statement emphasized that it was going to make the transition easy for its citizens, pointing to recent announcements by automakers to gradually stop producing gas and diesel cars.

Paris has faced rising air pollution in the last few years.

The Netherlands is also banning ICE-powered cars by 2030, aiming to cut emissions in the country by 49 percent over the next 13 years.

A study carried out by an air quality monitoring group said Monday the move had had a limited impact on air quality.

On the heels of France and the United Kingdom announcing plans to phase out sales of combustion-engined cars by 2040, the state of California is mulling a similar move much earlier than the 2040 target date, .

"This government goal affects the whole French territory, rural zones included", the Paris City Hall statement said.

"If we want to achieve it, we need to get out of petrol and diesel several years beforehand in urban areas, particularly in big cities", the city said.
