Rose McGowan Accuses Harvey Weinstein of Rape, Claims Amazon Studios Ignored Her

"We have been in touch with Ms. McGowan's team", a Twitter spokeswoman said in an e-mail statement on Thursday.

In the meantime, Twitter is on the back foot given both the extent of the allegations against Weinstein and the fierce reaction it has provoked in both Hollywood and around the world.

Actress Rose McGowan, who has been using her Twitter account to speak out against Hollywood production studio The Weinstein Company, has had her account temporarily disabled.

On Instagram, McGowan warned her followers that there are "powerful forces at work".

And following a series of tweets calling Bob Weinstein a "POS" and telling Ben Affleck to "f*** off" after accusing him of lying in a statement where he said he knew nothing of Weinstein's behaviour, McGowan revealed she has been banned from sending tweets, retweeting or liking.

Analysis Twitter was today accused of censorship after it froze the account of actress Rose McGowan - who had just publicly slammed sex fiend Harvey Weinstein. McGowan on Tuesday tweeted "now I am allowed to say rapist".

Some 30 women - including actresses Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow - told The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine for recent stories that Weinstein had sexually harassed or sexually assaulted them. "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices", Twitter tweeted. McGowan's Twitter account is still online. I was incredibly naive and young and it did not cross my mind that this older, unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him.

The NYT reported that McGowan reached a $100,000 settlement with Weinstein after an encounter in a hotel room at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997. She previous year said that she had been raped by a "studio head".

Amazon's decision comes just four days after film executive Harvey Weinstein was sacked from The Weinstein Co., a film studio that he co-founded, following allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault by multiple women in the entertainment industry. Many of them, she said, were well aware of his predatory nature, and she called them out by name.
