Three dead after 'horrific' skydiving incident in Australia

It is understood that emergency services attended the scene at Mission Beach, off Alexander Drive at approximately 3pm this afternoon.

Police believe a solo skydiver may have collided with tandem skydivers mid-air, with their parachutes failing to deploy correctly.

There are a number of skydiving companies operating in Mission Beach.

There are reports that three people have died after a skydiving accident near a beach in Brisbane.

The jumpers were not immediately named, but police said the dead men were instructors at Skydive Australia.

One eyewitness said: "You could see one chute was tangled and it wasn't opening".

Skydiving is an attraction for adventure-minded tourists in the area, along with whitewater rafting on the Tully River, he added.

Mission Beach is located halfway between Cairns and Townsville in Northern Queensland and is a popular destination for backpackers travelling down Australia's East Coast.

The two others were discovered soon afterwards, where they had become entangled in a nearby tree.

"I was just watching him in free fall until he went behind the trees, and that was the last I saw", he said.

The company operating the dives, Skydive Australia, released a statement on Friday offering its "deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences" to the families of the deceased and to the local skydiving community.

"It wasn't good to watch". Police investigators and other agencies remain at the scene.
