ASI Killed In Clashes Between Police, Bimal Gurung's Supporters Over Gorkhaland Agitation

West Bengal police today said Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supremo Bimal Gurung has links with Maoists and insurgent groups in the North East and had procured sophisticated arms from them.Additional Director General (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma said the police had information about Gurungs links with Maoists and the rebel groups.

"The GJM workers, who were armed, started firing".

A GJM supporter and a sub-inspector were reportedly killed in clashes in Darjeeling. "Last night (Thursday), we received specific inputs that Gurung was camping on the river bed below Lepcha Bustee along with boys of GJM's militant wing Gorkhaland Personnel, and that there were lot of arms and ammunition there", said Darjeeling's Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaturvedi.

"He is now trying to move to Sikkim again", said Sharma.

Sharma conceded that the heavy and sudden firepower caused casualties among the police contingent.

Six assault rifles, 500 rounds of ammunition, pistol, gelatine sticks were recovered.

Kenyan opposition supporters still defy ban to continue protests
He supported protesters' right to demonstrate, he said, but has so far stopped short of calling people onto the streets himself. But in an interview in London, Odinga told the AP he's willing to return if that changes. "We must respect the law", he said.

Bimal Gurung, the leader of GJM, is wanted by the Bengal government over deadly clashes.

It must be noted that cornered GJM chief Bimal Burung has been on the run since the Bengal police slapped a warrant against him under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Tamang has been made the chairman of Board of Administrators of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration by the state's Mamata Banerjee government.

This is the first such incident of violence after the 104-day long indefinite shutdown in the hills was called off on September 26 by Mr Gurung following an appeal by Union home minister Rajnath Singh.

GJM has been demanding a separate Gorkha state.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to attend the meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna.
