Shenandoah Valley Law Enforcement Implements Initiative for Domestic Violence

I recently had the opportunity to attend the City's 9th Annual Domestic Violence Awareness breakfast and briefly discuss numerous resources available to residents who may in some way be involved in this bad epidemic. "This awareness was crucial because domestic violence is a serious social problem and risky crime that affects millions of individuals across the United States regardless of age, economic status, race, religion or education". It expanded to a week of remembrance and advocacy until 1987, when the first Domestic Violence Action Month, as it is called today, was observed. "Events organized at the District Attorney's Office to raise awareness will include a clothing drive that will benefit Empower Yolo and a resolution to proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month which was signed by Yolo County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday". According to CEASE, the state of Tennessee spends over a billion dollars a year on domestic violence related expenses including law enforcement response, medical costs and missed days of work. Sadly, whether we realize it or not, all of us know people whose lives have been marked by domestic violence.

The 5K and vigil presents at least one way to push back against domestic violence, Rainey said, but people should also be aware of the local Domestic Violence Hotline: 443-865-8031. A list of shelters and other resources is available on the ACADV website.

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence has information for survivors on the Domestic Violence Awareness Project Web site.
