Truck Bomb Kills at Least 20 in Somalia's Capital

The return of Al-Shabaab to Bariire happened barely two weeks after a deadly attack at a Somali National Army base late September where they reportedly killed 17 soldiers.

Police say people are trapped under the rubble of a hotel that was largely destroyed when a massive truck bomb exploded in Somalia's capital.

Seven people have been killed and at least 10 others wounded in a auto bomb blast near a key intersection in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, officials and witnesses said.

Several others have been injured from the blast in the Somalian capital, which took plane in an area surrounded by government offices, hotels and restaurants.

"The death toll will surely rise".

The explosion was followed by gunfire between security forces and armed men around and inside the popular Safari Hotel.

"There are casualties but we do not know the exact amount as the scene is still burning", he told Reuters.

Security official Mohamed Adan told AFP news agency the "huge blast" was caused "by a trucked loaded with explosives".

The blast occurred two days after the head of the United States Africa Command was in Mogadishu to meet with Somalia's president, and after the country's defense minister and army chief resigned for undisclosed reasons.

Al-Shabaab was forced out of the capital six years ago by African Union and Somali troops, and subsequently lost control of major towns across southern Somalia.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
