Congress minister joins BJP in Himachal

Anil Sharma fought and won the last Himachal Pradesh Assembly election from Mandi, his father's traditional seat.

In a big jolt to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh just ahead of the state Assembly elections, his cabinet Minister Anil Sharma, son of former Union Minister Sukh Ram, joined BJP. In that post, in Hindi, he also wrote that he would try to "fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dreams".

An official announcement of the same is likely to made later today. Top BJP leaders are expected to welcome them into the fold.

Three-time victor from Mandi and a Rajya Sabha member, Mr Sharma is miffed as his father was allegedly barred from attending Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's rally in Mandi on October 7, which was organised to kick-start his party's campaign for the state polls.

Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh will be held on November 9 in a single phase. Mr Sukh Ram has been sidelined by the Congress following his conviction in Telcom Scandal.

While the main contest is considered between the incumbent Congress and the Opposition BJP, the CPI (M), which has so far had a minuscule representation in the legislative assembly, is keen on putting up a fight.

While Sukh Ram won from Mandi, Anil Sharma was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1998.

"I have been given BJP ticket from Mandi and the party has informed me about this, he said".
