No cracker sale in Delhi-NCR this Diwali, reiterates Supreme Court

While hailing the recent ruling of the Supreme Court prohibiting sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR area ahead of the Diwali festival, some students based in Dehradun said that the best way to protect environment from the firecracker-spawned damage during the Diwali festivities is to restrain their urge to celebrate the occasion through indiscriminate bursting of firecrackers.

Interestingly, the October 9 order only suspended the sale and did not impose any restriction on the bursting of crackers. If the pollution levels remain in control the top court will look forward to cement the decision in coming years. The traders who had invested a huge amount of money with a belief of smooth and heavy business this Diwali 2017 season have faced a huge blow when the top court changed its mind. Crackers are already being burst. "We are not going to modify (the order) as that will go against the spirit of our order".

"The court has not stopped people from celebrating Diwali festival", the Bench said, pointing out that the festival was celebrated not only by the Hindus but also by Jains and Sikhs.

"We are pained to hear that some people are giving the order a communal colour".

Responding to a question at the end of a two-day RSS working committee meet, Joshi said no "extreme" decision should be taken about Diwali, which will be celebrated on October 19 this year.

The bench brushed off statements by certain political leaders criticising the ban, saying they were entitled to their views.

After Diwali celebrations, the Supreme Court, responding to a petition of 2015 and banned the sale of crackers.

"Though firecrackers are deemed to be the quintessence of Diwali celebration, I am sure that Diwali can be celebrated sans them".

They had on Thursday mentioned the matter before the Apex Court for an urgent hearing, pointing out that they would not have stocked firecrackers for sale but for the court's September 12 order that revived their licences.
