Chiefs' Loss to Steelers Shows No NFL Team Is Invincible in 2017

Pittsburgh safety Mike Mitchell hit Smith late and below the knees to take 15 yards more on the play, setting the Chiefs up starting the fourth quarter on the Pittsburgh 12-yard line. But the old man made sure to make that task as hard as possible. On a day where the offense racked up six yards of total offense in the first half, this game was way closer than it should have been.

Hunt had a rough day running the ball against Pittsburgh with only 21 yards rushing.

It was tough to accept what stared right back at you.

The historical numbers don't look good for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into Week 6.

The Chiefs defense mustered a single first down and that didn't come until the final drive of the half.

"We straightened a few things out the second half". They also spent the afternoon with their paws on Smith, holding the NFL's top-rated passer to 246 yards and a TD.

In fact, it took a Steelers mistake -- a miscommunication between quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and receiver Antonio Brown -- to give the Chiefs some momentum as Roethlisberger's low throw was intercepted by a diving Marcus Peters.

There was an element of resilience to the Chiefs as quarterback Alex Smith showed the value of a short memory. The latter deep heave down the sideline ended in a touchdown, which improbably brought the Chiefs to within two points late in the second half. On a fourth-down try at the five-yard line, Alex Smith saw his pass fall incomplete, giving the ball back to the Steelers.

Pittsburgh came into the game third in defensive DVOA against the pass, to go with being tops in the league allowing 140 yards through the air per game.

Comparing the Chiefs' offensive output Sunday to the previous five games gets staggering fast.

Smith rallied the Chiefs in the fourth quarter, connecting with De'Anthony Thomas for a 57-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 12-10.

Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said the Steelers started the game with greater intensity than his team's defense.

He made up for that by earning 89 yards receiving, his second-best receiving game of the season.

It was a thumping in every respect, and the most alarming thud came from Hunt.

The gritty Chiefs failed to fade away, however. "It comes with the game of football". They visit the AFC West rival Raiders on Thursday night. This year's team is the only undefeated franchise in the NFL at 5-0 and the Chiefs have defeated arguably the best teams in the league already to do so-the New England Patriots, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Redskins.

And the Chiefs do relish the opportunity to exact a little revenge on the Steelers. The Chiefs' defense eventually forced a punt, but Pittsburgh accomplished its goal by draining 5 minutes off the clock and getting out of the shadow of its own end zone.

Running back Le'Veon Bell #26 of the Pittsburgh Steelers carries the ball into the endzone for a touchdown during the game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on October 15, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri. Even just a year ago, the Steelers defeated the Chiefs twice, including an upset in the playoffs on the road at Arrowhead Stadium.

The next step on the road to truly being solidified as a championship contender is not just beating other conference heavyweights, but doing it consistently. Their regular-season record over the past three seasons is sparkling even after Sunday's loss, and sits at 28-10.
