Death toll climbs to 68 due to heavy rain in Vietnam

At least 54 people have died and another 39 are missing in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in several provinces of Vietnam, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said on Friday.

Vietnam is the world's third-largest exporter of rice and the second-biggest producer of coffee, although the floods have not affected the Southeast Asian nation's coffee belt. It is forecast to produce heavy rains over Vietnam starting Monday October 16.

In the northern province of Hoa Binh, 11 people dies and 21 others went missing.

The torrential rains and landslides also damaged infrastructure and killed more than 230,000 livestock in central and northern regions.

It has also warned ships and boats to avoid the approaching typhoon.

Vietnam often suffers from destructive storms and floods due to its long coastline.

Almost a month has passed since a typhoon last roamed the waters of the western Pacific Ocean, and this typhoon is only the beginning of what will be another active stretch. According to the disaster agency, another tropical depression was expected to hit the Philippines on Thursday evening and could strengthen to a tropical storm when it moves to the South China Sea.

In 2011, Thailand was hit by its worst flooding in half a century, where the disaster killed hundreds and crippled industry, including the country's key automotive sector. Bangkok has often been described as the "Venice of the East" because of its many waterways.

The city government defended itself, saying it was working closely with the irrigation department.

The committee added that five people were still missing in that incident.
