Toddler accidentally drowns after falling in grease pit at ice cream shop

A 3-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon when she fell into a grease trap and drowned at an ice cream parlor in Auburn, police said.

According to the Lee County Coroner, a child was reported missing at Bruster's Real Ice Cream on East University Drive at 1:00 p.m.

Video surveillance of the area shows her playing with her siblings and falling through a lid covering one of the grease pits on the property. Harris maintains that her death was the result of an accidental drowning. Our thoughts also are with our young crewmember who tried to revive the child. Minutes later, she was found unresponsive in an in-ground, 6-foot container of grease behind the shop.

The child was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
