Deadly attack hits Afghan police training centre

15 people were killed and more than 40 were injured in a suicide attack in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

He said the city hospital reported receiving 130 wounded in the attack, which included a suicide bombing.

"At first a suicide bomber detonated a auto filled with explosives near the training centre, making way for a number of attackers to start their assault", the interior ministry said in a statement.

Both civilians and security forces were among the casualties, deputy public health director Hedayatullah Hameedi said.

Security officials told RFE/RL that provincial police chief Toryal Abdiani was among the dead.

The latest attacks comes as four-way talks between Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States and China reportedly are being held in Oman with the aim of ending the Taliban's 16-year insurgency.

"At the moment the area is sealed by the crisis response unit and efforts are ongoing to eliminate the terrorists", the interior ministry statement added.

A gun battle followed between the attackers who were armed with guns and suicide vests and the security forces at the centre, which is located near the Paktia police headquarters, the interior ministry statement said.

The commando-style raid in Gardez, about 80 miles south of Kabul, also injured about 100 people after two vehicle bombs exploded outside a facility that serves as a command center for local police and a main training site for police recruits.
