Mob sets on fire slain PDP leader's house in Kashmir, family rescued

The house of Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh, a former sarpanch from Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district who was killed yesterday by terrorists, was set on fire today.

Sheikh's family members had a scuffle with the assailants in which one of the militants, identified as Showkat Ahmed was also killed, the official said. "They set ablaze the house", said Shopian superintendent of police AS Dinkar.

The militants on Monday evening had killed Sheikh at Imam Sahab area of Shopian.

The house was damaged in the blaze.

Immediately, police swung into action and rescued the family members which included Sheikh's mother, Rafiqa, wife Nusrat Begum, brother Farooq Ahmed Sheikh, his two sons and two daughters. "Soon after the incident, fire tenders along with the police team rushed to the spot to douse off the flames", he said.

The Director General of Police Dr SP Vaid said confirmed in a tweet that the insurgent was killed in scuffle.

Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned the killing of former Sarpanch and burning of his house. "Such dastardly acts can not justify or achieve any political goals", the Chief Minister said.
