Cong intensifies fire on Centre, EC over Gujarat poll schedule

The Gujarat elections would be a trilateral contest between Indian National Congress (INC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) which is contesting for the first time from the state.

Former finance minister P Chidambaram slammed both PM Modi and the Election Commission for delaying the Gujarat poll dates and alleged it was helping the state government announce more sops.

"We are duty bound to point out that such allegations against the EC, which has to work on the principle that Caesar's wife must be above suspicion, will malign its autonomous functioning", Stalin said.

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea of Congress seeking its direction to the Election Commission to use VVPATs (voting machines with paper trail) in the coming assembly elections in Gujarat and install CCTV camera in each polling booth to check mobility of people inside the booth. The Prime Minister will hold another rally in the state on October 22.

A Deccan Herald editorial also questioned the EC's logic behind the polls. "The final decision will be taken by party chief Sharad Pawar and senior leader Praful Patel", they added. In its bid to put up a strong challenge to the BJP in Gujarat, the Congress has already reached out to Patidar leader Hardik Patel, OBC leader Alpesh Thakor and Dalit community leader Jignesh Mevani. They can not say anything to me, therefore, they putting pressure on the EC. "And criticising the Election Commission is not the right thing in a democracy", Rupani said.
