White House on lockdown, suspect held

"Update: subject is in custody, Lafayette Park & North Fence line along Penn".

The Secret Service said that it took a suspect into custody on Friday morning after reporting "suspicious activity" near the White House. Reporters and staffers are instructed not to leave the White House while the investigation is ongoing.

President Trump was not now on Capitol Hill when the threat was called in, and was instead on his way to Hawaii ahead of his first presidential tour of Asia.

The Presidential manor was put on lockdown and the area along Pennsylvania Avenue was closed following the incident, local media reports said.

Mr Trump was accompanied on the plane by First Lady Melania Trump, Chief of Staff John Kelly, US Trade Representative Bob Lighthizer, and two top advisers.
