Google Removes UC Browser From Google Play

Google seems to have taken down the UC Browser application from Play Store, although UC Web's other offering - the UC Browser Mini - is still available for download.

UCWeb browser taken down from Google Play Store over misleading users. In addition, it is the sixth most downloaded Android app in India. The mobile-friendly version of the web browser seemingly disappeared without a trace earlier today, just weeks after the app topped 500 million downloads on Google's mobile store. According to the Internet Trends Report 2017 by Kleiner Perkins, released in June this year, UC Browser is India's leading mobile internet browser with 50% market share followed by Google's Crome and Opera browser. UC Browser has previous year claimed that it has over 100 million monthly active users in India and Indonesia.

This is not the first time UC Browser had landed in a soup over user privacy.

Chrome is the most popular browser in the world, both on desktops and mobile devices. The app, which is particularly popular in India, has been delisted from the app store for misleading and unhealthy promotions.

The best example of this is Alibaba who is the company that's in charge of UC Browser.

Many of the Reddit posters addressing UC Browser's unexpected disappearance seem to think that the recent allegations are to blame, as it had been thought that the app could be banned in India should the accusations hold any water. Back in 2015, Canadian technology research group Citizen Lab reported that the application was providing critical personal information, including location, mobile number and device details, to third-party applications.
