Leyard Gets Nod for NBC Olympics Coverage of 2018 Winter Games

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday in a statement "welcomed" the United Nations resolution and added that "the expression of the expectation that it will help promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia reflects the Korean government's commitment to make the PyeongChang event an 'Olympic of Peace'".

Pyeongchang 2018 President Lee Hee-boem and Vancouver 2010 ladies figure skating gold medallist Kim Yuna, an ambassador for the Games, spoke at the Assembly.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach told the 193-member world body that with the resolution the General Assembly is "creating the conditions for all athletes to compete in peace".

It specifically asks member states "to ensure the safe passage, access and participation of athletes, officials and all other accredited persons taking part in the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games".

The resolution was drafted under the initiative of the South Korean government, with numerous United Nations members collaborating to the process. It urges United Nations member states to observe the truce for seven days before the Games begin on February 9 until seven days after the Paralympic Winter Games end March 18. "As was the case with NBC Olympics' coverage of the Rio Games, Leyard displays will help us take our world class scenic design to a higher level both visually and artistically". The two countries remain technically at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended with a truce and not a peace treaty.

"The Olympic Charter states the goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity", she said.

"It was at this General Assembly last September that South Korea President Moon Jae-in expressed his commitment to achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula".

"I believe the Olympic Games are the best expression of our values".

"We hope our joint action today will lead to a chain reaction for the promotion of peace within the region and beyond", Lee added.

"Together we are more powerful than any one of us alone".

Kim said she experienced "the same spirit and power" as a 10-year-old watching the South Korean and North Korean delegations jointly enter the arena at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Another reason for Olympic officials' optimism over possible North Korea attendance in Pyeongchang is that leader Kim Jong Un is a well-known sports fan, and he has spent heavily on sport in connection with his bid to lift living standards in the North.

The Greek Olympic Truce tradition dates back to the eighth century BC, and has since served as a sacred principle of the Olympic Games. The resolution was adopted by consensus on Monday at the 72nd General Assembly.
