While the US Geological Survey says it was centered off the coast about 9.3 kilometers northwest of Pohang, state-run Korea Meteorological Administration said the epicenter was inside Pohang.

A rare 5.4-magnitude natural disaster hit South Korea's southeast Wednesday afternoon, the second most powerful quake on record in a country that seldom experiences significant tremors. The Pohang natural disaster is the strongest Korea has experienced since 2016, after the magnitude 5.8 quake in Gyeongju.

South Korea was hit by a major 5.4 magnitude natural disaster earlier today.

Nuclear power plants in Gyeongju and the surrounding areas are reported to be safe and unaffected by the quake. The company is conducting inspections to ensure safety, it added.

As many fear more quakes that may take place on the crucial day, Prime Minister Lee Nak-Yeon ordered officials to deploy "all government resources possibly available" to ensure that Thursday's test is held smoothly.

For Shin Kori units 5 and 6 under construction in the southeastern city of Ulsan, the KHNP said they will be built to be safe against a magnitude 7.4 quake.
