Singapore train collision leaves 28 injured

- Picture by Low Youjin/TODAY SINGAPORE, Nov 15 - Twenty-three passengers sustained minor injuries and had to be taken to nearby hospitals after a collision between two trains at Joo Koon MRT station this morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in the Facebook post that they were alerted to the incident at 8.33am and had sent 23 injured passengers to hospitals.

Jammed train doors were forced open to help injured passengers out. It said a faulty west-bound train had stalled at Joo Koon station on the system's East-West line at 0818 AM.

"I was scratched on my left hand though it's not that serious".

The incident was one of two faults which hit Singapore's train system on Wednesday morning. "At 8.20am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train", the LTA and the SMRT said in a joint statement.

Trains continued to run in both directions on the unaffected side of the station platform, with SMRT announcing that commuters should expect 10 minutes of extra travelling time between Joo Koon and Tuas Link stations. "

"The Ministry of Transport, Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT are in touch with these injured passengers to offer the necessary assistance.

Associate Professor Lawrence Loh, an expert on corporate governance at the National University of Singapore Business School, said the collision gave a "whole new dimension" to the train problem.

The first major collision between MRT trains took place on August 5 1993, when a front-to-back collision occurred between two trains at Clementi MRT station.

A commuter, Mei Anne posted on her Facebook page saying that she was on the train which collided with the other train.
