Stanton edges out Votto for National League MVP

Stanton edges out Votto for National League MVP

Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins is the victor of the National League most valuable player award, barely edging Canadian slugger Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds in the voting.

Stanton hit.281 with a major league-best 59 homers and 132 RBIs.

Stanton received 302 votes, two more than Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto. Votto also got 10 firsts and had 300 points.

"I remember when I was 16 years old I went to a try-out and they told me not to come back", he told reporters on a call after the award was announced. But Votto paced the sport in on-base percentage, his.454 mark smashing Stanton's.376. Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was third in the voting.

Jose Altuve, Giancarlo Stanton Win MVP Awards

As the baseball industry anxiously awaits a possible trade involving him, Giancarlo Stanton was selected most valuable player Thursday for the first time in his career.

Since 1995, only Altuve, San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey and Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant have won the MVP award in the same season their team won the World Series.

The award is a remarkable achievement for the 5-ft 6-in (1.68m) Altuve, who was told early on that he had no place in Major League Baseball. He hit 24 home runs with 81 RBIs, scored 112 times, stole 32 bases and showed a sharp glove at second base.

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, considered the other contender for the AL award, finished in second. Ramos, the 19th pick in this year's draft, impressed in his professional debut, hitting.348 in 35 games for the Rookie-level AZL Giants. Third baseman Justin Turner finished eighth, first baseman Cody Bellinger ninth, closer Kenley Jansen 15th, ace Clayton Kershaw 17th and shortstop Corey Seager 18th. His Astros won the World Series for the first time in franchise history. Voting for the award was completed before the postseason.
