J&K: Security forces gun down five terrorists in Bandipora

A commando of the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Garud Force and five militants were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district on Saturday, an official said. One personnel from the IAF's Garud force was killed in the gun battle while two army personnel were injured.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid described it a major success and said Hajin was a hard area.

Defence ministry spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia told UNI that troops launched a search operation at Chandergeer, Hajin, in Bandipora on Saturday following a tip-off about the presence of militants.

He said the operation was going on when the reports last came in though firing has stopped.

In combat areas, there were 125 reports of sexual assault in 2016, whereas 118 were reported in 2015. The Marines investigated 157 assaults at Camp Pendleton and 55 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

He said the search operation resulted in an encounter when the militants hiding there fired on the search party of the security forces, who retaliated.

"It seems that LeT and Jaish militants were having a meeting in the area when the forces got a tip off", sources said.

The development is a big boost for the security forces in the Valley.
