CSCPCR, UNICEF come up with special programme to mark Intl Children's Day

World Children's Day has been held every year since 1954 "to promote global togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improve children's welfare".

The special day established in the year 1954, offers an opportunity for communities around the globe to promote children's rights in order to create a better world for kids.

He said the Day is an occasion for us all to reaffirm our commitment to the fundamental principles laid down in the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child as well as our national obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is an internationally endorsed human rights treaty, which has the objectives of providing freedom and human rights to children without discrimination or violence and the right to an education, life and play.

Children from other Pacific Island countries also took over broadcast airwaves through similar programmes during Universal Children's Day.

Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino: 'I won't make mass changes for Dortmund'
Tottenham Hotspur take on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night. I still think we should be feeling confident going into the rest of the season.

"We are here today to commemorate the day when governments got together in a room like this one to make sure that every child, regardless of his/her nationality, gender or religion, has the right to have an education, healthcare and participation in the national life", said UNICEF representative Robert Jenkins at the event.

Despite tremendous humanitarian progress in the decades since the first World Children's Day, 385 million children around the world still live in extreme poverty.

However, many countries celebrate Children's Day on different dates. Interestingly, as well as celebrating UN's Children's Day, the United Kingdom has its own National Children's Day (NCDUK), which will be held on 13th May, 2018 - a Sunday, so as to allow kids to enjoy the day outside of school.

Every year, UNICEF has a special theme to mark the day and Children's Day 2017 theme is #KidsTakeOver.

Children from schools around Honiara will take over key roles in the SIBC studio to voice their support for thousands of their peers who are unschooled, unprotected and uprooted.
