The company reiterated that vertical mergers of this type are routinely approved.

While in office, Trump has regularly labeled CNN as "fake news" and in February his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner met with Time Warner executives and voiced concerns about what the administration considered as slanted coverage from CNN.

The legal challenge was expected after AT&T rejected a demand by the Justice Department earlier this month to divest its DirecTV unit or Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting - which contains news network CNN - in order to win antitrust approval.

Mathrubhumi further reported that the CPM alleged that BJP activists from outside, too, indulged in violence. Devaswom and Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said the attacks were part of organised violence.

The DOJ is filing a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, meaning the fate of the merger now rests with a judge.

DOJ officials on Monday said that they couldn't agree with the companies on an "adequate remedy" that would make the merger less anti-competitive.

AT&T is ready to go to court and is "confident" it will prevail in its $85.4 billion acquisition of Time Warner. The deal took an unexpected turn when President Donald Trump was elected after vowing to block the deal on the campaign trail while criticizing CNN, which is owned by Time Warner. Bloomberg's source said that the announcement will be about the Justice Department working to block the AT&T/Time Warner deal.
