The man accused of driving a van onto a crowded lower Manhattan sidewalk in an attack inspired by the Islamic State, killing eight people and injuring 12, will face murder and terrorism charges in federal courts in NY.

If convicted on the murder and vehicle destruction charges, he would face a maximum penalty of life in prison or death, prosecutors said.

Federal prosecutors say Saipov executed the attacks in the name of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.

Saipov said he was proud of what he had done and even requested to display the Islamic State flag in his hospital room, federal authorities have alleged.

Attorneys from the Federal Defenders of NY are representing Saipov. A Belgian woman, a New Yorker and a New Jersey man were also killed.

"When Sayfullo Saipov carried out his brutal attack last month, his intentions were to inflict significant damage, death and injury to innocent victims and terrorize this city", Sweeney added.

Saipov allegedly planned to use the truck to strike pedestrians in the vicinity of the West Side Highway and then proceed to the Brooklyn Bridge to continue to strike pedestrians, the indictment states. One of the phones was filled with almost 90 ISIS propaganda videos, the feds have said.

After carrying out his attack, Saipov was shot by a New York City police officer and arrested. Saipov is due in court on November 28, officials said.
