Rome Rescue Mission 300 turkeys short

The Union Rescue Mission said there will be another meal giveaway closer to Christmas.

The facility offers two to three meals each day, but the free Thanksgiving meal each year by far dwarfs those meals, both in terms of the number of people they are feeding and the logistics involved.

With a few scoops of mash potatoes and some gravy, hundreds of plates were served to those in need at the Fresno Rescue Mission in Downtown Fresno.

Cooper helped to prepare the meal and will also help serve it.

Development Director Heather Griffin says, "We've had volunteers this week in here trying to help us prep for the turkeys and making cranberry sauce or helping us making macaroni and cheese, opening cans of greens beans".

Record crowd expected for Salvation Army's Thanksgiving dinner
The Thanksgiving Day Celebration Service and Dinner will be hosted by a group of volunteers from Second Baptist Church. The numbers for our mobile meals are down this year and so we have extended the sign up through noon on Wednesday.

"I appreciate it very much", White said.

Enjoying the meal with a group of friends, Makayla Maykuk said she was thankful for the meal and counted it as a blessing.

"There's a lot of people who don't have family so we want to be that family for them", Don Eskes, CEO of Fresno Rescue Mission, said. Money they raised to go towards these Thanksgiving meals. "This is a town that cares about their team so it's good for us to give back".

Medina said he's grateful to everyone who helps put on the Thanksgiving lunch and says more people like them are needed.

Staff at the Mission say on ordinary days like Saturday, big assembly lines are welcome. Really opened it up to the broader community to say you know if you're alone on Thanksgiving and you don't have the means maybe to provide a Thanksgiving meal for you and your family, come and join us.
