Thanksgiving leading day for home cooking fires

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the agency shared photographs from three local homes recently damaged by kitchen fires.

Fire officials say there are four times more cooking fires on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year - and a lot of them involve families trying to deep-fry their turkey.

"Unattended cooking is the top cause of fires in the home", says Elliot F. Kaye, commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

"Deep frying a turkey in hot oil over 350 degrees is as flammable as gasoline; accounting for a high number of house and garage fires reported each year". If you have to leave the room, even for a moment, turn off the burner.

Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.

Check all the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work properly.

As tempting as it is to peek at the television to watch the parade or catch a game, it's best to stay with stoves, ovens and ranges in the kitchen. In the event that a fire does occur, you'll want your only loss to be your turkey, not your home.

Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind yourself that you are cooking, as guests, phones, children, pets and other activity can easily distract a cook.

To prevent spillover, do not overfill the fryer. An uneven surface could lead to spills and all that hot oil could result in some painful burns.

-Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles. They also encourage families to review their fire escape plan.

Never fry a frozen turkey, make sure it it completely thawed to avoid an explosion.

Santa Barbara County Fire says it's good to have the furnace inspected a professional and the filter swapped out before using the heater.

Fire crews sent out several tips on how to have a safe winter and holiday feast just before Thanksgiving.
