CJ Beathard to Start vs. Seahawks over Jimmy Garoppolo, Per Kyle Shanahan

The San Francisco 49ers feel like they have a good problem on their hands. You watch the way C.J. Beathard and Jimmy Garoppolo have incredible promise and are capable of being National Football League starters.

What to know: The 49ers are coming off their bye last weekend and their first win, November 12 at home over the New York Giants.

Shanahan will ultimately make the call whether Garoppolo or Beathard starts this week, a decision that once seemed academic but might have been altered a bit by Beathard's strong performance in leading the Niners to their first win of the season against the Giants.

In the short term, questions still abound about when Garoppolo will make his 49ers debut. Until then, he'd been hastily learning a watered down version of the playbook so that he could step in if Beathard went down with an injury. Most of that time was spent circling back to the basics of the offense rather than focusing on small pieces of a weekly game plan.

"Matt talked about in year two how much he learned more than year one", Lynch said. "Like all our players, we want to set him up for success, even more so since he's a guy we think can be our franchise guy".

Lynch said the growth Beathard has shown allows the 49ers to be patient. At the same time, Jimmy Garoppolo doesn't exactly have a ton of live game reps. Lynch lauded the quarterback's intangibles, praising his work ethic since arriving in the Bay Area.

Garoppolo has been in the building for almost a month and had a chance to show his work ethic, interact with his teammates and coaches and display his physical ability on the field.

"As always, we'll see how practice goes", Shanahan added, but it would take a dramatic series of events to change his decision after announcing it to the media. "He can spin a football in a big-time way".

Marsh, 25, spent the previous three years with the Seattle Seahawks, who traded him to New England in September for fifth- and seventh-round picks. Lynch made it a point to clarify that comment when asked if he could see a scenario in which the Niners would trade Garoppolo after the season. Having Garoppolo on the roster gives the 49ers several options. That said, Lynch is planning on Garoppolo being under center for the 49ers in 2018.

"The competitor in me, obviously, you want to get out there, play with your teammates and help the team win", Garoppolo said.
