Supermoon to light up the sky this weekend

Supermoon to light up the sky this weekend

My definition is stricter: There's only one supermoon in a given year, reserved for the full moon with the biggest apparent size.

In the United Kingdom, the supermoon will reach the peak of its full phase at 3.47pm on 3 December, according to the Met Office.

The night sky on Saturday December 2 will appear brighter as the full moon would be a supermoon.

Supermoons occur when a full moon reaches an orbit where it is the closest to the earth, making the moon appear up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual.

Supermoons are squishy because there's no official astronomical definition of the term.

At different stages in the moon's orbit around the earth it will be closer to us or further away. But the supermoon that took place exactly a month before that was much more notable - it was the closest supermoon to Earth since January 1948. But for not-so-close observers?

A supermoon is a full moon, but a full moon is not necessarily a supermoon.

The Slooh Supermoon Challenge livestream will kick off on Sunday December 3 at 9pm EST (Monday December 4 at 2am). The celestial events will be visible on both January 2 and January 31, but those conclude the remainder of 2018's supermoons, so make them count.

The bigger question is whether we'll be able to see the supermoon in Seattle.

The viewing for the supermoon might not be optimal though, as the National Weather Service is calling for limited visibility with a partly cloudy evening Sunday.
