Google is hiring 10000 reviewers to clean up YouTube

Google is hiring 10000 reviewers to clean up YouTube

Alphabet's YouTube said on Monday it plans to add more people next year to review and remove violent or extremist content on the video platform.

Youtube uses both human reviewers and "machine learning technology" to review video content posted on its platform.

"We will continue the growth of our teams, with the goal of bringing the total number of people across Google working to address content that might violate our policies to over 10,000 in 2018", Wojcicki was quoted as saying.

Reuters reported last month that several major advertisers - such as Lidl and Mars - had pulled ads from the platform over "clips of scantily clad children".

Be it the surplus of extremist content on its site that goes undetected, be it countless instances of child exploitation and abuse that parade around without penalty, and not to mention the utter vitriol of its comments section. The company said it will employ the same method it used this summer when it tried to get rid of extremist content.

Wojcicki is also trying to find a "new approach" to advertising in YouTube: "We are planning to apply stricter criteria, conduct more manual curation, while also significantly ramping up our team of ad reviewers to ensure ads are only running where they should".

"This will also help vetted creators see more stability around their revenue".

YouTube has terminated 50 channels and removed thousands of videos as also advertisements from 5, 00,000 exploitive videos under the current set of guidelines.

Wojcicki said the company would take "aggressive action" by launching new comment moderation tools.

She said advances in machine learning meant Youtube could take down almost 70 per cent of violent extremist content within eight hours of it being uploaded and almost half of it within two hours.

Google (GOOG, GOOGL) will have 10K people reviewing and flagging content across its platforms by next year to teach AI how to do the job better.

"Because we have seen these positive results, we have begun training machine-learning technology across other challenging content areas, including child safety and hate speech", she said. "But no matter what challenges emerge, our commitment to combat them will be sustained and unwavering", she declared.

The Warriors trailed by 20 points at half-time, but for the second time this season, they erased the large deficit to win. X-rays came back negative on Curry's injured right ankle, Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
