50 injured after passenger train hits freight train in Germany

A regional passenger train collided with a freight train Tuesday evening in the western German city of Meerbusch, located about 10 kilometres northwest of Dusseldorf, Xinhua news agency reported.

At least three of the passengers were "badly hurt" while the vast majority suffered light injuries, the Meerbusch fire department said on Twitter, giving the overall toll.

The accident took place between a passenger train and a goods train in the town of Meerbusch in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous region, the Bild newspaper said on its website.

Meerbusch firefighters have been rescuing passengers from the damaged train since 9:30 p.m. local time (2030 UTC).

Access to the crash site had been made hard due to broken power cables with a risk of an electric shock.

Power to the train line is set to be cut off for a short period so as to help free the people on board.

"We were lucky", National Express spokesman Marcel Winter said.
