Russian Federation probe cost $7 million over 5 months, DOJ says

The single biggest cost was $1.7 million for salaries and benefits, including $500,000 for special counsel employees and $1.2 million for Department of Justice staff working under Mueller.

The Special Counsel's Office Statement of Expenditures report covers expenses between May 17, when Mueller was appointed to the post after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, and the end of the fiscal year September 30.

"Although neither legally required nor reported in prior Special Counsels' Statements of Expenditures, DOJ components that support the SCO were asked to track expenditures attributable to the investigations", the special counsel's office said in a report.

For perspective, the $6.7 million cost to taxpayers is almost equal to the cost of President Trump's trips to his Mar-a-Lago resort through just his first six months in office.

She maintains that she is eligible to sit in Parliament because she took all "reasonable steps" under British law to renounce. The Prime Minister said the Australian people were instead sick of the "dishonesty, the twists and turns of the Opposition".

On Friday, Mueller revealed a guilty plea by Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, who admitted lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

It is likely that Mueller's investigation could last for years, according to an analysis of previous special counsel probes conducted by the data analysis website FiveThirtyEight. Starr's predecessor, Robert Fiske, spent an additional $6 million investigating the Clintons' involvement in the Whitewater real estate deal, according to a May 1999 GAO report. Manafort and Gates have entered not guilty pleas in defense of a number of business related charges. Mueller also disclosed that he secured a guilty plea from George Papadopoulos, who was a junior foreign-policy adviser to the Trump campaign, for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with Russian operatives.

In its report, Mueller's team notes that it draws its funding from a revolving "permanent, indefinite" appropriation for independent counsels provided by Congress, as well as from non-reimbursed Justice Department agency expenditures and from intelligence agency appropriations.

In a statement, the special counsel's office said it will release a similar expenditure report after March 31, 2018.
