Aadhaar linking deadline will be extended to March 31, Centre tells SC

As the court said that the matter would be heard next week by the Constitution bench, Attorney General K.K. Venugopal indicated that the deadline for the linking of bank accounts with Aadhaar would be extended till March 31, 2018.

The Attorney General, however, made it clear that February 6 next year would remain the deadline for linking Aadhaar for availing of uninterrupted mobile services as it had been mandated by the apex court. The Centre had made it mandatory to link sim cards with Aadhaar number. Aadhaar card has to be linked to PAN card on or before December 31, 2017, otherwise, the PAN card will be blocked. The deadline set earlier by the government was December 31.

"UIDAI has clarified on a video circulated purportedly out of context of a lady lawyer on WhatsApp, Twitter and Social Media and said that the video refers to an order passed by the Supreme Court on August 11, 2015 when the court had restricted use of Aadhaar to only few programs", the statement said.

Supreme Court on 30 October had said that a Constitution Bench would commence hearing on the clutch of petitions against Aadhaar scheme from the last week of November. Aadhaar card can be linked, with the customers' mobile banking to the bank accounts.

We had two strikers in the second half and that helped, it was a big lesson for me. They played 10 players inside the box, it was nearly impossible.

The Central government has previously made Aadhaar card mandatory for carrying out nearly all the legal tasks in the country. So far, private citizens run the risk of being locked out of access to their own bank accounts if they do not link them with Aadhaar by December 31.

As the case is pending in the Supreme Court, the government is not enforcing the provision, the official said.

Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017 and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities.
