Global consumer spending on mobile apps to cross $110bn by 2018

Apple has announced its Best of 2017 apps and games, this year utilizing the Today cards in the iOS 11 App Store to feature the winners. Apple is celebrating the most popular apps, music and movies across the App Store, Apple Music and iTunes.

Game apps, on the other hand, were dominated by Ludo King, 8 Ball Pool, Super Mario Run, Candy Crush Saga, Sniper 3D, and others. The Witness was also selected as Game of the Year on the Mac App Store, where Aurora HDR 2018 won in the app category.

This year's most popular app in India, however, is topped by WhatsApp, followed by YouTube, Facebook, PayTm, and Facebook Messenger.

"We want to partner with innovation incubators to support local developers and bring their content onto our platform, this is part of our long term strategy to build up our localised content inventory", said Li. As we previously noted, Bitmoji has seen explosive growth over the previous year and a half as it's steadily integrated the app's customizable emoji into Snapchat.

For Apple Music, the most popular album was Drake's More Life and Ed Sheeran snagged the most popular song with Shape of You. Taylor Swift's album "reputation" has already shot up to #3 on the 2017 U.S. top album charts, despite having only been available for a short period of time.

Apple also has new editorial this time around; "trends of the year".

Moana was the top movie of the year, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Wonder Woman, Apple said.

Similarly to previous annual charts, Apple has revealed top charts for the most popular apps and games of the year too.

Congrats to mindfulness and meditation app Calm and the $9.99 Affinity Photo from Serif Labs for taking home the coveted trophies, not to mention the little-known Splitter Critters and Thekla's The Witness for being named the 2017 iPhone and iPad Game of the Year respectively.
