New Fire Hits the 405 Freeway, in the Heart of Los Angeles

Fire officials say 700 homes have been evacuated, along with an apartment building.

The Thomas Fire jumped to thousands of acres with startling speed as Santa Ana winds, blowing as fast as 35 to 50 miles per hour, carried its embers.

UPDATE (9:50 am) Up to 150 acres and 0% contained.

No injuries had been reported.

This map, published by the Daily News, shows where the fire is burning right now-and how close it is to landmarks such as the Getty Center and the Skirball Cultural Center. There have been mandatory evacuations in some parts of LA - Moraga Drive, Linda Flora Drive, and Casiano Road down to Bellagio Road.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered in Kagel Canyon and some other nearby areas. All North Bound lanes of the 405 are closed in the area.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said they're trying to "stop this fire before it becomes something bigger" like the Bel Air fire of 1961.

Citywide, about 600 officers were assigned to coordinate security and various "firefighting events, " Beck said.

Senator Bob Casey D-Pa also joined the calls for Franken to step aside, the first male Democratic senator to do so. After that initial account, several other women came forward to say Franken inappropriately touched them.

On Tuesday, two unsafe fires swept through southern California, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. About 700 firefighters responded to what was labeled the Creek Fire. Three helicopters, 90 engines and two bulldozers were also deployed, according to the Forest Service.

Cal Fire has been explaining the hazards of the fire and the effects of wind on the blaze.

An unknown number of homes were destroyed by the blaze, according to LAFD.

Large-animal evacuation centers at Pierce College, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center and Hansen Dam Recreation Area quickly reached capacity.

Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen, who both have homes in Los Angeles, took to Twitter to discuss the fires. The northbound side of the 405 was shut down about 5 a.m.

As the fire burns northeast of the Getty Center and east of the 405 (San Diego) Freeway, the museum and other Center facilities are closed to the public. These closures are causing massive gridlock in what is already one of the city's most congested intersections.

About 9 a.m., the southbound freeway was reopened, but some onramps and offramps remained closed in the area, as was a section of Mulholland Drive, the CHP reported.
