Rolls-Royce suffers fresh wave of troubles with Dreamliner engines

And on Tuesday, the airline's flight to Tokyo Narita also returned to Auckland due to what the TAIC again said were "abnormal indications on one of the engines".

In a statement released today the Transport Accident Investigation Commission say they've opened inquiries into both events, with investigators having been on the ground in Auckland since Tuesday.

Auckland Airport has welcomed the announcement by Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines that they will increase flights on the Singapore to Auckland route.

Air New Zealand is cancelling some flights and retiming others due to maintenance requirements on the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that power its Boeing 787-9 fleet.

The schedule changes are primarily affecting services to Houston, Shanghai, Buenos Aires and Perth, and the carrier says it is focused on securing replacement aircraft capacity.

"Rolls-Royce does not have any replacement engines available while this maintenance work is undertaken which means some schedule changes are unavoidable", Air NZ adds.

Passengers affected will be contacted, and the latest information will be published on the Travel Alerts section on Air New Zealand's website. Boeing has had a programme of replacing rear turbine blades on the Trent 1000 engines. Japanese airline ANA first reported issues with Trent 100s in the summer of 2016.

Earlier this year, Virgin Atlantic switched one of its daily trans-Atlantic flights to Delta Air Lines, which bought a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic in 2012, to allow the Trent 1000 engines mounted on its 787 Dreamliners to undergo maintenance.

"Rolls - which has more than 400 of the US$10m engines in service - has acknowledged the problems".

Rolls-Royce said it was working with Air New Zealand to minimise disruption and vowed to restore full flight operations as soon as possible.
