In 2014, 147 children died of flu - a lot of them from a particular strain, H3N2.

"Flu is increasing. We're seeing a pretty steep increase in influenza activity across the USA but especially in the South", said Brendan Flannery, a co-author of the new report and an epidemiologist in the CDC's flu division.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is to pause a plan to administer hepatitis A vaccines to children older than 12 months after the legislature's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee questioned the plan's effectiveness yesterday.

It may not sound like a disaster, since this year's flu shot is only 10 percent effective against the difficult-to-stop H3N2 strain.

Smith said she suffered temporary paralysis after getting the shot. "I believe there is a booster effect, although I can't prove that". "It's best to get it now and not wait until the flu is more widespread", Beard said.

"Because there is a risk, there should be a choice", Smith said.

Some people are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, including infants, children, elders and people with certain chronic health issues.

The Chickasaw Nation and Pontotoc County Health Department are offering flu vaccinations to the public at no cost from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Chickasaw Nation Community Center, 700 N. Mississippi.

This season, the CDC advises that only injectable flu vaccines (flu shots) are recommended. The flu vaccine is very effective against these, she noted. The dominant flu virus strain is H3N2, which can result in more severe illnesses than other strains. Early reports are questioning the effectiveness of this year's vaccine. You can also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose.
