Safest vehicles for 2018

Safest vehicles for 2018

The coming year will be the first that required a good or acceptable rating for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's small-overlap test, which measures how well front seat passengers are protected in frontal collisions, according to Consumer Reports, and many cars did not meet those new criteria to earn the top rating. And this year the IIHS is making the criteria more hard for automakers to earn a top grade. The 2018 Subaru Impreza, Legacy, Outback and WRX models earned the institute's highest Top Safety Pick+ award when those models are equipped with Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology and LED steering responsive headlights.

Fifteen vehicles earned the group's highest award of Top Safety Pick+, which is lower than past year.

This year, only 15 vehicles met the stricter criteria for the TPS+ award and another 47 earned the regular TPS (without the +) award. The institute said it devised a passenger-side small overlap front crash test because some manufacturers weren't paying enough attention to the issue.

Square Enix Confirms New Tomb Raider Game, Announcement Due Next Year
Square Enix is very excited to share some happy news with its fans: A new Tomb Raider game will launch in 2018. We presume this will be Shadow of the Tomb Raider , though Square Enix has yet to confirm its official title.

Headlights weren't factored in for the 2017 Top Safety Pick, and an acceptable headlight rating was enough to bump a 2017 award victor into the "plus" category. The sole Subaru model that did not qualify was the BRZ. For instance, automatic braking is a key requirement for the getting the "Top Pick Plus" rating, and in most vehicles, that comes at a significant price increase. The TOP SAFETY PICK+ accolade was introduced in the 2013 model year to recognize vehicles that offer a superior level of safety. Seven models with standard autobrake - the Toyota Camry, Corolla, Prius, Prius Prime and Highlander and the Lexus IS and NX - also have standard acceptable or good headlights and qualify for TOP SAFETY PICKwithout any added options.

The Institute's headlight ratings also are relatively new, with the first ones being released in March 2016.

The 2018 list of the safest vehicles is out, and just 15 earned the highest rating, down from 69 previous year. If the pattern holds, they'll have to score a good rating next year to make the 2019 list.
