Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel uncomfortably parallels his personal history

Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel uncomfortably parallels his personal history

"Discussing Weinstein, "Wonder Wheel" star Kate Winslet said, 'The fact that these women are starting to speak out about the gross misconduct of one of our most important and well-regarded film producers, is incredibly fearless and has been deeply shocking to hear.' Of Allen, she said 'I didn't know Woody and I don't know anything about that family".

Farrow went on to call out actresses like Kate Winslet, Blake Lively, and director Greta Gerwig, who have been vocal proponents of the #MeToo movement, yet have made a decision to work with Allen despite sexual assault allegations.

Allen has written strong roles for women in the past, but in this case the best I can say is that he's written Winslet lots of words, repetitive reams of them, all expressive of Ginny's anxiety. Having thought it all through, you put it to one side and just work with the person. Discussions will ensue over Allen's overtly misogynistic treatment and language towards his female characters. "His female characters are always so rich and large and honest in terms of how they're feeling and he just knows how to write dialogue for them to communicate all that". During Allen's custody trial with Mia Farrow in 1993, a child psychiatrist, Dr. Stephen Herman, called the Yale-New Haven report "seriously flawed", while a psychiatrist testifying on behalf of Allen, Dr. Anne Meltzer, said the study "reached conclusions that were supported well by the data they collected".

'As far as I know, he wasn't convicted of anything. I'm an actor; he's a director. Which I guess is kinda interesting - it implies that the film will be a post-modern pastiche of itself, and sets up the idea that Allen is out to lampoon half-baked melodrama. (It felt more like bad Arthur Miller to me, maybe "A View from the Ferris Wheel?") There's a generous reading of the movie going around suggesting that this all might be an intentionally lousy play penned by our novice narrator, but I'm not buying it.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, you can seek help by calling the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673). "My tragic flaw is I'm too romantic a character", he says in a delivery as wooden as the boardwalk, but that's not Timberlake's fault. Several people provided testimonies in court that matched Farrow's claims of a specific incident, Vanity Fair reports, including a babysitter who, according to Farrow, allegedly "saw Allen with his head buried" in her lap when she was not wearing underwear. Also, Allen wasn't convicted because of an acquittal; instead, as Farrow stated in her op-ed, the CT state prosecutor had "probable cause" to try the case in 1993, but opted to spare a "child victim" the trauma of a trial. "I could [only] know my experience".

House approves stop-gap government funding bill
Many on both sides have decided a headline-grabbing federal closure would be a political blunder, at least for now. During a press conference Tuesday, Ryan praised the bill passed by the Senate early Saturday morning.

Farrow wrote that she feels disappointed when women and men she admire work with Allen and then deflect questions about the accusations.

Soon-Yi married in 1997 and are still together to this day.

Allen is facing professional condemnation for over-saturating the colour in Wonder Wheel by abruptly introducing various hues of orange and tangerine throughout the film. Allen was never prosecuted for the alleged assault and has vigorously denied the claim. No other allegations of sexual misconduct have been brought against Allen, though the director was criticized for making what some perceived as a sympathetic statement about Weinstein.

While the #MeToo movement has sparked the takedowns of many powerful predators in Hollywood, one accuser has still not seen the justice she has so long deserved. "Why is it that Harvey Weinstein and other accused celebrities have been cast out by Hollywood, while Allen recently secured a multimillion-dollar distribution deal with Amazon, greenlit by former Amazon Studios executive Roy Price before he was suspended over sexual misconduct allegations?"
