United Nations envoy warns of spiraling violence as talks on Jerusalem

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov addresses the Security Council on the United States decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital [Richard Drew/AP Photo] [The Associated Press] The UN Security Council has convened an emergency session to discuss Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move that has led to deadly clashes in Palestine and strong condemnation from world leaders.

"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel", Trump said.

Another said the session would show U.S. "isolation" on the issue. Traditional US policy has been that it must be negotiated between the two parties.

The British envoy said that London will continue to pressure all parties to avoid any action that impedes peace, adding that his country is committed to a Palestinian-Israeli peace agreement according to the 1967 borders. Trump's decision will have "very negative impacts" on the peace process, which considered Jerusalem one of the final status issues decided through negotiations.

The European Union's representative to Palestine Ralf Tarraf Thursday said the European Union and its member states will continue to respect the global consensus and the Security Council resolution 478 and will not transfer any embassy to Jerusalem unless a final solution is reached. "This is what makes Jerusalem so universally important to everyone, and this is what makes any decision on Jerusalem so emotional", Mladenov said.

"East Jerusalem will become the capital of Palestine in the future and the West is the capital of Israel", the Russian envoy said, adding that Russia requested the American side to explain why the embassy was moved to Jerusalem.

Israel claims the entire city as its indivisible capital, while the Palestinians want the eastern sector as the capital of their future state. "We believe the only realistic solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine is based on two states and with Jerusalem as the capital of both".
