US Move On Jerusalem Will 'Move The Ball Forward' - UN Ambassador

"The US policy change on Jerusalem puts it "on the side of occupation" and exempts it from a mediation role in the peace process", the Arab League said in a statement.

Various Palestinian factions, including militant organisation Hamas, called for a day of rage on Friday against the U.S. and Israeli occupation.

Mr Netanyahu said: "Paris is the capital of France, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel - it has been the capital of Israel for 3,000 years and the capital of the Jewish state for 70 years".

"Our demand is that policymakers in the United States review the decision and defy it", said Ezidyar. Macron described it as a "breach of global law and a risk for peace".

Mogherini said she delivered that message to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and would say the same to Netanyahu as he meets with European Union foreign ministers Monday in Brussels.

"I hear (from Europe) voices of condemnation over President Trump's historic announcement but I have not heard any condemnation for the rocket firing against Israel that has come (after the announcement) and the very bad incitement against us", Netanyahu said.

European Union diplomats are set to tell to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that their position remains Israeli-Palestinian peace can only be obtained through negotiations and that Jerusalem is not the capital exclusively of Israel. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent state.

The move, announced by President Donald Trump earlier this week, triggered massive and violent protests in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and Jerusalem itself. It says the moribund negotiations can be revived only by ditching outdated policies.

"People around the world are very upset, not just the people in the pro-Palestine or Muslim countries but even the United Nations", Qasqas said.

The new United States stance, fiercely criticized by Palestinians, Arab leaders and others as gravely damaging any prospects for Middle East peace, has given rise to swelling protests across the region in recent days.

Erdogan has sought to position himself in the centre of diplomatic efforts to force Trump to reverse his decision and has held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron to that effect.

A possible meeting with Pence has also been turned down by Egypt's Coptic Church, MENA state news agency reported.

Protesters in Indonesia have joined the chorus of thousands across Muslim-majority cities in Asia, including in Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan, to condemn the controversial decision by the White House to reverse a longstanding USA policy and raise the status of Jerusalem.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not meet US Vice President Mike Pence during the latter's visit to the region this month, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki has said.

On Thursday, a day after US President Donald Trump formally made the announcement, Jibril Rajoub, a senior Fatah politician, said "we will not receive him [Pence] in the Palestinian territories".
