Yankees officially get Stanton from Marlins

The Cardinals and Giants had both had Stanton in their sights from the time that the new Marlins ownership group, led by former Yankees great Derek Jeter, made it known they wanted to trade Stanton in order to cut their payroll.

FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman reported the Yankees will hold a "major press conference" in Orlando, Florida, ahead of the 2017 MLB winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. NY now boasts an incredibly potent lineup on paper, as Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez hit a combined 160 home runs last season - just eight fewer than the Red Sox hit as a team in that span.

The 28-year-old outfielder is still owed $295 million over the final decade of his record $325 million, 13-year contract.

The Marlins tried to trade Stanton to the Cardinals and Giants, but Stanton, who has a no-trade clause and veto rise in his massive contract, turned down the deals.

For the Yankees, this means a fearsome home run tandem of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, without mentioning the other names in the lineup. The deal is sure to get a legion of fans that already dislike the Yanks railing against Jeter sending Stanton to his old team.

All that needed to happen was for Stanton to waive his no-trade clause and the slugger was heading to the Bronx.

Stanton was acquired Saturday from the Miami Marlins in a blockbuster trade that shook Major League Baseball.

The Yankees' payroll for purposes of baseball's luxury tax was about $209 million this year, and owner Hal Steinbrenner has vowed to reduce it below next year's $197 million threshold, which would reset the team's base tax rate from 50 per cent to 20 per cent in 2019.

The primary benefit of the trade for the Marlins is financial relief.

It was a situation too good for Yankees general manager to pass up. The 18-year-old Devers hit.245 in the Dominican Summer League and the rookie Gulf Coast League.
