A's Acquire Local Outfielder From Cardinals

According to FanRag Sports, the A's sending two minors leaguers to St. Louis for the expendable Piscotty.

The team selected him in the first round (36th overall) in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft out of Stanford University. Piscotty was born in Pleasanton, Ca., a suburb of the Bay Area near where the A's call home. "That's about all I know". You just hurt for him.

Previous reports suggest the Athletics were not open to trading top prospects in a potential Piscotty trade, but that infield prospect Yairo Munoz had been discussed along with several relief pitchers.

Members of the Cardinals front office have remained at the winter meetings with a few pending deals to complete. Additionally, St. Louis' trade for Marcell Ozuna earlier Wednesday left Piscotty without a spot in the Cardinals starting outfield.

Piscotty batted.235 last season, in a down year, but had an on-base percentage 107 points higher (.342).

Getting Ozuna, one of the prizes of the offseason, made Piscotty expendable, and the A's are ready to pounce.

With Khris Davis penciled in as the only full-time outfielder for the A's, the belief is that Piscotty will man right field, with Boog Powell spending his time in center field. His 2016 campaign saw a.273/.343/.457 batting line with 22 home runs, 85 RBIs, and seven stolen bases.

Gretchen Piscotty's diagnosis became public in early June, after Stephen missed almost a week of Cardinals games.

"We actually watched all the games", Stephen Piscotty told the St. Louis-Dispatch at the time.

He's under contract through 2022 at a total of $29.5 million and has a club option for 2023 worth $15 million with a $1 million buyout.
