Kandivali murder: Two arrested in connection with Shiv Sena leader's killing

Police traced Jogdand to suburban Dahisar after scanning CCTV footage of the area of the incident.

Ashok Sawant (62), a Shiv Sena leader and ex-corporator in Mumbai was stabbed to death around 10:45PM outside his house in Kandivali in Mumbai on late Sunday. Pawar may have brought the gang together and asked Dodhia to arrange for a vehicle while orchestrating the murder, said the police.

According to media reports, the Shiv Sena leader - who was running a cable business - had been receiving extortion calls for the last few days. Sawant had lodged a complaint with the police regarding this. The police are also yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder and recover the murder weapon.

Though Sawant was rushed to the nearby hospital soon after the attack, the doctors declared him dead on arrival. Two men were allegedly waiting for Sawant to return. At one point, Sawant tried to fight back, but the assailants overpowered him and stabbed him with a chopper over 15 times.

Ashok Sawant is survived by wife, two daughters and a son.

The police reached the spot for investigation thereafter, and samples have been taken for forensic investigations. Sawant, a two-time corporator from Samta Nagar, is the brother of assistant police commissioner Subhash Sawant, who is attached to the anti-terrorism squad. "We have registered an FIR against unknown people under IPC Sections 302 and 34 for murder at Samata Nagar police station".
