Panthers fire OC Shula, QB coach Dorsey

Team officials did not say who the Panthers plan on pursuing as Shula and Dorsey's replacements.

Mere days after their season came to a conclusion, the Panthers announced that they have fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey.

Shula has coached 30 years, including 26 in the NFL.

There are some other proven coordinators now unemployed with ties to either Rivera or the Panthers, including former Carolina offensive coordinator and Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski and ex-Chargers coach and Broncos coordinator Mike McCoy. Carolina entered as the No. 5 seed following a 11-5 finish to the season. He helped Newton and the Carolina offense reach the Super Bowl in 2015 before the Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos.

Over that same span the Panthers averaged 229.5 passing yards per game, which is the third-fewest in the league.

Carolina finished 19th in total offense, fourth in rushing offense and 28th in passing this past season.

Shula was the quarterbacks coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to joining the Panthers.

Dorsey, a University of Miami alumnus who led the Hurricanes to the 2001 BCS National Championship and a national title berth in 2002, has also been with the Panthers organization since 2011. He also has two family members already on Rivera's staff - his brother, Ron, an offensive consultant, and nephew Cameron, the assistant quarterbacks coach.
