Widespread Flu Hits Earlier This Season

Twenty-six states - including Maryland and New Jersey - are facing high activity levels of the flu, the CDC report said.

The 2018 flu season can be worse since the 2014-2015 season was the most severe season in recent years, CDC reported. That's because the flu vaccine is less effective against that strain.

According to the NHS, symptoms for flu can include an aching body, exhaustion, loss of appetite, sudden fevers, nausea and headaches.Vaccination is the best protection we have against the flu.

Chief Executive of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Karen Partington, said: "Like other NHS organisations across the country, we have seen an increase in respiratory conditions, more severe illness, and an increase in flu which means our hospitals are very busy".

Though the flu shot formula for this season may not be the best match, it still helps protect and prevent the flu.

It's possible to be infected with the flu virus and not even know it.

In the March announcement for the 2017-2018 season in the northern hemisphere, the World Health Organization recommended trivalent vaccines that include A (H1N1) pdm09, A (H3N2), and B (Brisbane/Victoria lineage).

Anyone with the flu was advised not to go to hospital, however, or visit elderly or infirm relatives.

He noted that FluSurvey's map only contains data from 7,500 Britons and should be interpreted with caution because it simply provides information for flu-like illnesses and does not specifically reveal the rising number of cases of the H3N2. In Pennsylvania, through the end of 2017, there were over 6,200 cases documented, with one-third of those in the last week of the year and 60 percent within the last two weeks of December. Many others can not call in sick due to the precarious nature of their employment, putting neighbors and family at risk of infection.

Even though the flu vaccine has been only 30 to 40 percent effective in the last few years in protecting against the flu (and this year may actually be worse), the flu vaccine is still the most effective way to protect yourself and others from getting the flu.

Emergency rooms in Chicago dealing with the flu have led to a backup in admission of ambulance patients, forcing ambulances to hold patients longer. UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, for example, typically sees around 140 patients per day.

"Looking at our numbers over the last couple of weeks and knowing there's a bit of a reporting delay, we're certainly on the upswing right now in terms of increasing activity for flu", she said of Ontario.

H3N2 has been responsible for some of the worst flu seasons in the USA in recent years, including the 2006-2007, 2012-2013, and 2014-2015 bouts.

Fresno County has recorded its first influenza-related death of the season. Those patients truly need emergency care.

"We watch flu very carefully throughout the health authority".
