Discovery Communications will leave Maryland for NY

Discovery Communications will reportedly leave Silver Spring for New York City, ending 14 years in the DC suburb. "We have therefore made the hard decision to reduce our footprint in Maryland over time, with the ultimate closure and sale of our One Discovery Place headquarters building in Silver Spring, expected in 2019".

The company said it is in the planning stages of finding space and a location in NY, where it said it would be close to business, investment and production partners. I respect the contributions Discovery has made over the last 15 years to Silver Spring and Montgomery County.

Discovery was launched in Landover in 1985 and moved its headquarters to Bethesda in 1991, then to its current building in 2003. "We have therefore made the hard decision to reduce our footprint in Maryland over time, with the ultimate closure and sale of our One Discovery Place headquarters building in Silver Spring expected in 2019", Zaslav said in the memo.

Riemer said the decision to move the headquarters is related to the company's acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, which is based in Knoxville. "It's a lot of jobs".

"The pending acquisition [of Scripps] has allowed us to undertake an in-depth analysis of where we work and how we work, and the chance to create the most efficient locations for our best-in-class creative, technology, production and operating functions to thrive now, and into the future", wrote Zaslav.

Potential state capture inquiry witnesses want to see terms of reference
President Jacob Zuma has announced a commission of inquiry into allegations of State Capture. He selected Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Mnyamezeli Mlungisi Zondo to undertake this task.

Discovery says it will still maintain a Maryland Network Hub to house select network and support functions, as well as select other functions such as government relations.

Discovery also plans to have a technology hub in Northern Virginia and another in Knoxville.

Discovery's TV channels include Animal Planet, TLC, Investigation Discovery and OWN.

About 1,300 Discovery employees are based in the Silver Spring area, and 1,000 are based at Scripps' Knoxville headquarters.
