Hulu at Long Last Provides an Update on Subscriber Numbers

The top three dramas on Hulu in 2017, based on hours watched, were Law & Order: SVU, This is Us and The Handmaid's Tale. The night was a milestone for the company, which until last year's Emmys had never won any major awards, but instead had been relegated to sitting on the sidelines while Netflix and Amazon marched up to the podium for shows like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Transparent. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's list of winners included shows from Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu, which took home five of the six most important trophies in the Globes' TV section.

Netflix added new subscribers at a slower rate than SVOD rivals Amazon Prime Video and Now TV in the United Kingdom in 2017, but remains the dominant local payer, according to BARB research.

One of the biggest reasons why Hulu has done very well in 2017 is because it had a lot of content added to its lineup in 2017 including the entirety of Futurama, several 90's throwbacks and several selection of NBC favorites like Parenthood and 30 Rock.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos is now the richest person in the world
Shares of Amazon have risen by nearly seven per cent this year after rising 56 per cent in 2017, reported money.cnn.com. That is about 17 per cent of the online book-selling company that he founded in a Seattle garage in 1994.

Alexia Quadrani, media analyst of J.P. Morgan, had estimated in June that Hulu would total $2.4 billion in revenue in 2017 - 61% from subscribers' revenues and 39% from advertising. Elisabeth Moss also won the top award for best dramatic performance in a TV series for "Handmaid's". Last year, Hulu launched a $40-per-month service that gives users access to 50-plus live TV channels, including those of its parent companies Disney, 21st Century Fox, and Time Warner, as well as CBS and A+E Networks. Conversely, 60% of Amazon users have Netflix.

But whoever Hulu's ultimate owner is, it's in everyone's best interest to see Hulu's numbers grow. The data comes from Nielsen nPower HUT/PUT viewing source, looking at total day, average daily time spent in December 2017 for all viewers.

Hulu CEO Randy Freer, who took the reins last year when Mike Hopkins departed for Sony, called 2017 "a momentous year for Hulu". In 2017 it reportedly lost $594,000. It was Hulu's first win in the drama category.
