Hundreds call hepatitis hotline after possible exposure at West Jordan convenience store

The estimate of 2,000 residents is based on the store's average sales volume, the health department said.

The Salt Lake County Health Department is urging customers who used the restroom or consumed certain items at the 7-Eleven location at 2666 West 7800 South to contact the health department immediately at 385-468-INFO (4636).

Officials in Utah say customers at a West Jordan 7-Eleven may have been exposed to hepatitis A.

The Salt Lake County Health Department reports that the customers who are risk of exposure are the ones who purchased and consumed non-packaged foods, such as fruit, hot foods, and self-serve drinks.

Contact the health department or your healthcare provider about getting an immune globulin or hepatitis A vaccination if you fall into those groups.

"People in need of prophylaxis must receive it within a short time period of their possible exposure, so it is essential that affected customers call the health department as soon as possible", the statement read.

"While the infected 7-Eleven employee is epistemologically linked to the outbreak, there are so far no cases of illness tied to the store", they said.

7-Eleven didn't respond to a request from CSD for a comment on the situation, or the course of action the company is now pursuing.

"It's also important the food handlers be conscientious with hygiene, hand washing and not working when ill - and that managers be vigilant in enforcing those important requirements that protect public health", the health department executive said.

Hepatitis A vaccine is covered by most insurance plans and is widely available at local pharmacies, health care providers and SLCoHD immunization clinics.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HAV is generally transmitted via person to person through consuming contaminated foods, drinking contaminated water, or via feces.

Hepatitis A can cause mild-to-severe illness lasting weeks to months.
