Alabama secures major investment from Toyota, Mazda

Toyota will use the plant to build its best-selling compact auto, the Corolla, while Mazda will use it to build a new crossover vehicle.

The Huntsville site is near Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, which turned out almost 700,000 engines previous year, powering one-third of the Toyota vehicles built in the U.S. The plant built its 5 millionth engine in February and in September announced a $106 million investment to install a new 4-cylinder production line to produce advanced engines.

The prized $1.6 billion auto factory awarded to Alabama by Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. could be an even bigger win than expected, as the site's size leaves plenty of room for future expansions. The site for the new plant is in Huntsville, located approximately 14 miles from Toyota's Alabama plant (Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc.). Production is expected to begin by 2021.

Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motors, said the new facility is something of a homecoming since the company already has one plant in the state. "We are proud that this partnership puts Alabama on the forefront of technology in this dynamic global industry". For Mazda, the plant represents an enhanced commitment to the USA market with an increased focus on manufacturing and sales in the country. Sullivan said the factory itself is a huge asset for the state, but it will also cause economic ripples by bringing spinoff jobs at suppliers and service companies in the area.

Beyond that, suppliers continue to build new plants and expand existing operations in Alabama, including BOCAR, which plans a $115 million plant in Huntsville that will create more than 300 jobs. I don't see how we're proving people wrong.

"By making such cars here in Alabama, we hope that over time our plant will come to occupy a special place in the hearts of our employees and the local community". At an estimated $500.5 million in total value, we believe the package is comparable to the state offer in Alabama, where officials apparently have not included the value of their local property tax exemptions or the value of 1,200 acres of donated land for the site, which all would be in addition to their reported $380 million state offer.

The State of Alabama is the fifth largest producer of cars and light trucks nationally with a strong automotive manufacturing presence including Toyota's engine plant in Huntsville, where Toyota employs 1,400 workers.
